The Hon Mark Parnell MP made a submission to the SA Parliament regarding Marathon and uranium mining on
Arkaroola. Please click here for the full version of the statement. We sincerely thank Mark for his continuing vigilence.
SA Premier Mike Rann made a lengthy statement in parliament last
week about protection for the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary. The
Hansard record of that statement is attached.
The Premier said “I certainly recognise the unique and sensitive
environmental, cultural and heritage values of this site, which I
visited last year. It is a stunning landscape, rich in flora and fauna,
and I found its beauty to be compelling.”
He continued “The conditional one year exploration licence for Marathon Resources ... in no way
confers a right to mine.”
Co-owner and manager of the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary, Marg Sprigg, responded
“I am delighted with the Premier’s public recognition of the value of Arkaroola to the community.”
Mr Rann also indicated that “the government is examining options for the future conservation
management of the Arkaroola sanctuary.”
He said that these options will include possible designation as a national park, although this would not
necessarily preclude mining. This would also impact on the Sprigg family’s continuing eco-tourism
business.
Other options include listing Arkaroola on the National Heritage List and perhaps later seeking World
Heritage listing, along with a ban on mining.
Marg Sprigg advised that she and her brother Doug, who jointly inherited the sanctuary from their
parents, were already investigating national heritage listing.
She said that, following her father’s purchase of the 610 square kilometre mountain lease in 1968
“The Sprigg family has acted as caretakers of this extraordinary wilderness for more than 40 years. Our
public education and support for wide-ranging scientific research here is funded by the widely
acclaimed and accredited eco-tourism business. We are determined to protect the Arkaroola
environment for future generations of Australians and wish to continue managing the sanctuary.”
Ms Sprigg said “nominating Arkaroola for the National Heritage List will achieve this. We will very
much welcome the government’s assistance with such a nomination.”
Mr Rann announced that his Minister for the Environment (Paul Caica) and new Minister for Mineral
Resources (Tom Koutsantonis) are to consult with native title holders, pastoral leaseholders and
holders of mineral exploration licences before advising State Cabinet on how best to protect
Arkaroola.

We Urgently Need Your Help!
We need to prevent mining in Arkaroola's mountains.
Please give serious consideration to writing or emailing your concerns as soon as possible to the Premier at premier@sa.gov.au (The Hon M D Rann MP, Premier of SA, 200 Victoria Square, Adelaide, 5000), and the Leader of the Opposition at liberal.opposition@sa.gov.au (The Hon Isobel Redmond MP, Leader of the Opposition, Parliament House, North Terrace, Adelaide, SA 5000).
If Marathon's licence is renewed, we hold grave fears as to what environmental damage will be caused should they be allowed to move to their next phase of exploration which will mean a dramatic increase in local drilling and opening up of new tracks within the heartland of these magnificent mountains.
Having been caught red-handed with their previous episode of illegally burying and dumping tonnes of rubbish on Arkaroola, Marathon's track record of environmental vandalism is cause for serious concern.
We really do need your help.
The Liberals announced that they will support existing Arkaroola protection. It is fantastic for Arkaroola to have their support, but Arkaroola needs more than this as under the existing Class A Environmental Zoning of the Development Plan for Out of Councils (Flinders) the protection is simply a guideline. We need real protection that will ban mining in Arkaroola, and exploration which under Marathon Exploration has been carried out in a deplorable manner.
A Liberal delegation led by the Leader of the Opposition Hon Isobel Redmond came to Arkaroola to see it for themselves.
Arkaroola was visited from membes of the Government, The Premier Hon Mike Rann, Minister for Mines & Energy Hon Paul Holloway and Minister for Environment Hon Paul Caica.

The State Government have had a change of mind and will now be making all submissions to Seeking a Balance public at www.pir.sa.gov.au/minerals/public_notices/northern_flinders_ranges_project
By now you should have received an email from Jason Irving of DEH explaining what is happening. Please read this email carefully and respond as you see fit. We would like to think that everyone who has sent in a submission will have no objections to it being made public but we also appreciate that some may not wish to.
Please note that permission (or otherwise) needs to be emailed to Jason by 12 March 2010.
If you have not received an email from Jason, we suggest you contact him as soon as possible on: jason.irving@sa.gov.au
