how can i help?

In line with the government’s request for comments on the management policies and zones, we urge you to send your comments. Arkaroola is an asset to all Australians and for future generations.

Comments must be received at either (or both) of the following government representatives by 29 January 2010 latest. After that date Arkaroola’s destiny is out of ours and the public’s control in terms of protecting one of the world’s most important cultural, geographic and spectacular mountain landscapes.

For those who have prepared a detailed submission we say a huge thank you.

Whilst it is indeed heartening to realise this, we fear that Arkaroola's future is far from secure. Minister Garrett made a very similar statement regarding the Beverly Mine, only to go ahead and give final approval. It is therefore imperative that as many submissions as possible be sent to DEH and PIRSA before 29 January to help the State Government decide in favour of our no mines on Arkaroola campaign.

For those who did submit a very breif response all is not lost. Both PIRSA and DEH have advised that they will accept 'Addendums' or 'Amendments' to previously sent submissions; if those people could be kind enough to send in additional material, which includes suggestions or recommendations, it would be most gratefully appreciated.

A Comment from the Federal Minister of the Environment:

In response to a letter written by Arkaroola to Senator the Hon Peter Garret AM MP, Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts, dated 23 December 2009, he is quoted as writing, inter alia:

"Australian Government policy is to only allow uranium exploration and mining subject to strict environmental, safety and other regulatory requirements in line with world best practice. I will not approve any mine proposal that may ultimately be made at Mt Gee unless I am satisfied that the environmental values of the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary will be protected and that the proposal represents world best practice."

We can only hope that if our State Government fails to see sense by eradicating all possibility of mining within Arkaroola's mountains that the Federal Minister, as the final arbiter, will provide the support the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary so desperately needs.

Whilst it is indeed heartening to realise this, we can't sit back and adopt a wait and see attitude - it is therefore imperative that as many submissions as possible be sent to DEH and /or PIRSA before 29 January to help the State Government decide in favour of our no mines on Arkaroola campaign.
